ASRM's Infertility Prevention Campaign, Page 3

Those Opposed

Folks at INCIID aren't the only ones unhappy with ASRM's infertility prevention campaign.

As one of our forum members states, "This is a blame-the-victim mentality that offends me and will hurt a lot of couples going through the pain of IF [infertility]. It seems to ignore the many causes of IF that are not preventable (i.e., endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, many types of male factor, hormone imbalances)."

It is for similar reasons that Julie Watson, president of ConceivingConcepts.com, believes ASRM's efforts are well-intentioned but miss the point.

"The ASRM would have served the general public better," says Watson, "by raising the issue of the need to discuss with your physician when one is young not only about lifestyle choices, but also about menstrual irregularities, painful menstruation, male problems and the whole host of other concerns, that are generally downplayed by doctors, but yet prove harmful to future fertility."

In her statement, Watson added that the campaign appears slanted toward women bearing the brunt of infertility cause, again, increasing stigma.

"Couples have such a difficulty with the public's perception of fertility already that this campaign only serves to perpetuate the myth that their infertility is caused by the woman being too heavy, too old, too skinny to conceive," commented Watson whose site offers, in addition to community features, a fertility products store.
