ASRM's Infertility Prevention Campaign, Page 4

Those in Favor

While communities that exist primarily or entirely online are unhappy with ASRM's infertility prevention campaign, those groups who spend most of their time working offline are feeling otherwise.

According to the American Infertility Association's (AIA) Pamela Madsen, "Nobody is blaming the victim here, or saying that all kinds of infertility are preventable."

RESOLVE, the first national infertility support group in the U.S., applauds ASRM "for being proactive and acting responsibly in educating the general public."

RESOLVE's Executive Director Joan Bowen says, "While there are numerous medical causes of infertility and treatment is certainly critical, RESOLVE also believes that the message that some infertility can be prevented is equally important."

Both groups, which have website presences but also offer support and education to folks offline, say that the message isn't necessarily intended to assist those who are already experiencing the trials of infertility. The message is meant for those who don't think infertility applies to them.

Madsen likens it to the need for diabetes education. "Just like diabetes, we need to raise awareness that certain lifestyle choices can cause infertility, just like weight and the lack of exercise can cause diabetes!"
