Question - Breast Lumps Formed During Fertility Treatment:
"I was advised to undergo IVF and started on Suprefact (buserelin) in accordance with the long protocol on Day 21 of my cycle. After 10 daily subcutaneous injections, I started developing fever and found lumps in both breasts. I was asked to stop the injections immediately and informed that buserelin is not known to have produced this kind of side-effect. I am worried about the outcome of these lumps. Kindly let me know if these are the direct result of the drug Buserelin and whether I shall need some other form of treatment for these lumps."
Answer:
Unfortunately, I cannot adequately respond to your question. Hopefully by now, you've been seen by a physician for closer examination and possible biopsy of the lumps you describe.
Suprefact (Buserelin) is used in the same manor as Lupron for some treatment cycles. Specifically, it is used at the beginning of a treatment cycle to shut off the woman's naturally occurring sex hormones, in an effort to better sync her cycle for the upcoming treatment. Expected side effects include symptoms similar to menopause, such as hot flashes, nightsweats, and other discomforts.
Knowing that, I can only say that a range of side effects are possible, and your feeling feverish could possibly have been related. Breast lumps can be related to your hormonal balances or not. You must see a physician for more accurate diagnosis and prognosis.
