Desiring Children Amid War, Page 2

Anonymous Percentages

People who experience the rude awakening of infertility and all that goes with it tend to, at some point, become very focused on their baby-making efforts. Not surprisingly, the majority of folks responding to our poll remain positive about bringing children into the world, even after the September 11 tragedy.

While not all respondents made the most determined choice in our poll, thirty-one percent did choose "There is nothing that could ever change my mind." From there, the responses decrease in confidence, but a small majority (55%) still express mostly positive feelings about having children.

Only two percent of respondents to our poll said that the terrorist incidents had "definitely" changed their minds in a negative direction, and that they "no longer wish to bring children in to the world."

Thoughtful Expressions

Perhaps understandably, the majority of folks who have thus far expressed their thoughts in our forum thread are still feeling positive about having children. Given that many, if not most, in our community have already spent a taxing amount of time, energy, and money on trying to conceive and/or maintain a successful pregnancy, one could easily suppose that this is an unusually determined lot of folks.

A few have even stated that the events of September 11 have spurred them on with more determination than ever. Several members remarked that to change their minds about having children now would be tantamount to surrendering to the terrorists' will. One commented that while the events gave her pause to reflect, she believes that the victims of the attacks would want survivors to "go on with our lives and to be happy."

As of this writing, only one member has stated plainly that "I absolutely refuse to get pregnant now," citing concerns about possible biological warfare and that the airplane attacks have been a "wake up call..." Of note, this member also disclosed that these concerns have simply been unwelcome additions to her previous fertility issues of age and health, and that an opportunity to adopt has just been serendipitously presented to her.
