Financing Infertility: Planning Resources

Whether you want to build your family through assisted reproductive technology or adoption, there are plenty of helpful resources that allow you to plan ahead financially. Using a little forethought and the experiences of others will help you feel more in control of the expenses related to adding children to your life.

Consultants

  • On her FertilityCoach website, psychologist Linda Tillman outlines key benefits of using a "coach" (consultant), plus how a coach differs from a therapist.
  • Former infertility patient and attorney Rhonda Levy offers confidential consultations to assist you through the processes. In this article on The Globe and Mail website, Ms. Levy speaks to the importance of becoming your own advocate in order to achieve the most successful (and perhaps cost-efficient) treatment.
  • Social worker Denise Brody offers a video for US$19.95 called Infertility & Adoption with Positive Options. The focus here is not necessarily financial, but guidance through the emotional decision-making process of family-building can help a couple maintain their relationship's integrity and, therefore, ability to plan more smoothly.

Be sure to ask any physician whom you consider part of your treatment team whether or not they have access to or knowledge of infertility consultants in your area. Also, better safe than sorry -- always obtain references from any consultant before engaging their services.
