Postpartum Depression Is A Killer, Page 8

When summing up her experience, Stacey Glaesmann sounds like a person reborn:

"My life is filled with joy that I couldn't even touch during my PPD. Though raising a toddler pushes me into frustration a lot of times, my daughter is the apple of my eye. I could not imagine life without her."

"I am a totally different person now -- I am more flexible, open to new ideas, and I now have a direction in life that I never had before PPD. So...though I would never wish PPD on anyone, I think every cloud does have a silver lining."

What can you do if you think you're at risk? Psychologist Deborah Issokson suggests that women traveling through infertility can boost their chances for postpartum emotional health by building a support network in the "trying to conceive" period.

Maintaining an awareness of your own life stressors in addition to infertility is also important.

Finally, she recommends that women who've struggled to conceive should allow themselves to be just as human as any new mother, and to seek help regardless of others' comments.
