Enter POF Support: the Premature Ovarian Failure Support Group started in the Washington, DC area in March 1995 by seven women responding to an advertisement in The Washington Post. The women ranged in age from 19 to 43 years of age, and ranged in length of diagnosis from 11 years to just one week prior.
Catherine Corp remembers,
"Since that first meeting, we have grown beyond the Washington DC area. The November 1995 issue of Marie Claire magazine published an article by Joanne Furio called My Menopause Started at Age 25. Our local support-line phone number was included at the end of the article, and we received over 120 phone calls from across the country."
The group assembled packets of info on POF and sent them to the callers. From that beginning, POF Support continues to grow primarily through word-of-mouth, physician referrals, and an occasional mention in popular magazines. Most recently, thanks to a grant from the Endocrine Nurses Society (ENS), a website was created and more women have been reached.
