Red, White, and Blues?

Time off from work, summer fun, fireworks. In the United States, that's how the Fourth of July is often spent. Other countries have their own special days, too. While the patriotism that these days can stir is not the same sentiment that other holidays invoke, for some, just being in a family-focused environment ~ at the beach, a picnic, the local mall ~ can be devastating. For most of us, however, when we talk about feeling blue during the holidays, we're thinking about those end-of-the-year days.

With that in mind, we're taking the time now, before the impact has a chance to knock us off our feet, to think about and maybe even prepare for the

biggies
, usually referred to as The Holidays.

First and foremost ~ Give yourself permission to feel what you are feeling. It's easy during the preparatory hustle and bustle to chastise yourself for feeling low while everyone else may seem so enthused. "Don't be a party-pooper, a scrooge," you may tell yourself. Hey! Isn't your party being dumped on? Isn't life being just a little scroogish with you? It's only normal to feel down during these times.

Right on the heels of feel-what-you-feel ~ While you're tasting the bittersweet life, don't swallow it whole. This little self-talk can save your sanity: just because it feels like the end of the world, doesn't mean it is.

From there, one might just end up here ~ If the world isn't ending right now, then where do I go from here? Now you're ready to move forward...

The wisdom of the Internet is abundant in good advice for surviving holidays. Take the time now to think about how you'll cope if you are not pregnant by then. Many who know suggest that two things in general are key to survival through a major life crisis: preparation and the ability to re-focus.
