One woman, Kim Galvin, has successfully used both the Internet and foreign pharmacies to make her rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) more affordable.
Because of reproductive immunology and other hormonal issues, Galvin is required to use high doses of meds during her IVF procedures. She learned about a pharmacy located in Middlesex, U.K. from her reproductive endocrinologist's office, did some comparative research on her own, and has been very satisfied with the results.
"Just as a comparison to put prices into perspective," explained Galvin, "I was on eight ampules of Fertinex a day for approximately 10 days, which equated to $2,240. from {the U.K. pharmacy}. If I filled the same prescription at a local U.S. discount pharmacy (the lowest prices I could find in the United States), I would have paid $5,520. for the same order. That's over fifty percent higher!"
Though she was initially worried about issues such as shipping, content and potency, "or if they were even the same products," Galvin was relieved at the prompt and concerned responses she received via email. A bonus: this pharmacy will reimburse patients at local prices in the event an emergency local purchase is necessary due to shipping delays.
It helped, Galvin admits, that she was referred to the pharmacy by her physician. She also said that a local pharmacist gave her the go-ahead, that the drugs she had purchased were the same as those he would sell to her.
While she winces at sounding like a product endorsement, Galvan adds, "During this difficult time of the overwhelming emotions we are dealing with, along with the huge medical bills... every little bit counts!"
