Question - Why Use Cortisone for Male Infertility?:
"My son and his wife in South Africa are trying to have a baby. He told me that he was put on a course of cortisone to help with antibodies in his sperm.
It didn't make any difference, apart from now he has the dreaded stuff in his body and he put on weight and his skin suffered... but he tells me that this is the only treatment for helping remove the antibodies confirmed in a sperm test.
I tried to find out why they use cortisone but could not find the answer. Do you know why they use cortisone?
He has gone this past week to give a sperm sample that has been 'washed' and then put into his wife."
Answer:
From what I've read, cortisone-like drugs can be used to reduce antibody levels, increase sperm motility and mucus penetration, thereby increasing fertility; however, I also read that, due to the potential for severe side effects, this treatment is rarely prescribed.
In fact, sperm "washing" is one technique that can alleviate some antibody issues, used in conjunction with intrauterine insemination (IUI), so perhaps your son and his wife are on the right track. IVF may be necessary.
