General Information

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom after London and Birmingham. It lies in the most industrialized strip of land, between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth.

Today, Glasgow is very popular with tourists. After London and Edinburgh, it is the third most visited city in Great Britain. It is often also the starting point for tourists heading for destinations throughout Scotland. This is aided by advanced infrastructure.

History

The original beginnings of the settlement on the river Clyde are in connection with fishermen. They founded a settlement here and originally engaged only in fishing.

According to local history, the founding of the town itself was to take place with the arrival of St. Kentigern (Mungo) in the 6th century AD. He was to build a church here near the places where the Gothic cathedral now stands. It has stood here since the thirteenth century and has an original (theme) Scottish decoration. Another important milestone in the history of Glasgow is the year 1451 - the establishment of the local university.

Today's Glasgow is a cosmopolitan place of many cultures and religions. Many modern buildings are being built in the city and a large number of cultural events are taking place.

Glasgow - Quick guide

In addition to many interesting buildings, galleries and museums, the biggest attractions include the Hampden Experience football stadium. The contrast of the football stadium is the oldest building in the city, the Cathedral of St. Mungo from the 12th century.

However, the real heart of the city is neither a football stadium nor cathedrals, it is George Square. The square, which is decorated with 12 statues, a beautiful town hall and a tower. There are also a large number of restaurants, fashion boutiques and caf├ęs.
