General Information

Leeds is a city in the north of England and the center of the City of Leeds, part of the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire. The river Aire flows through the city. History

The name of the city comes from the name Leodis, which was an Anglo-Saxon designation for a Celtic kingdom that resisted for some time after the Anglo-Saxon invasion. The first written mention of Leeds comes from a land register from 1086.

The development of industry in Leeds was conditioned by the construction of the Aire & Calder Navigation in 1699, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in 1816 and the railway in 1848. In 1893, Leeds was granted city status. At the beginning of the 20th century, Leeds began to change with the creation of academic institutions - the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University.
