General Information

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan district in South Yorkshire in the north of England. Its name is derived from the name of the river Sheaf, on the banks of which it lies. The city had a population of 516,000 in 2004, making Sheffield one of the eight largest English cities outside of London.

History

The territory of Sheffield was already inhabited in the period after the last ice age, but a significant population did not appear here until the second half of the first millennium, and it was the Anglo-Saxons and Danes.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that King Northumbria Eanred submitted to King Wessex Egbert in the settlement of Dore (located on the outskirts of present-day Sheffield) in 829. This event made Egbert the first Saxon king in all of England. After Norman rule of England, Sheffield Castle was built, which controlled the surrounding settlements and gave rise to a small town in its vicinity.
