Alicante is a port city in Spain, the seat of the province of Alicante, the southernmost part of the Autonomous Community of Valencia.
More than a fifth of the population are foreigners, immigrants in a massive wave of immigration at the beginning of the 21st century. Alicante is thus one of the fastest growing cities in the country. The local economy is based primarily on tourism.
The city was founded by the Romans and named it Lucentum (City of Light). In the second half of the 8th century. Alicante was ruled by the Arabs, in 1246 it was recaptured by Alfonso X. for the Castilian crown. In 1308, the city became part of the Kingdom of Valencia. Today it is part of the Valencia region.
The Old Town is located on the Mediterranean coast below the hill of Monte Benacantil (169 m). On the hill Benacantil is the castle of Santa Bárbara, founded 200 years bc, the current fortifications are partly from the 9th century.
The most important buildings in the Old Town include the Cathedral of San Nicolas from the 17th century. An even older date, from the 14th to the 16th century, is the Basilica of Santa María, which can be found in Plaza Santa María (Calle Mayor, Villavieja).
The three important buildings in the Old Town are complemented by the building of the Alicante Town Hall with two towers on the Ayuntamiento de Alicante (Town Hall Square), a Baroque building from the 18th century.
