Bournemouth is a large seaside resort and at the same time a one-tier administrative unit on the south coast of England in the county of Dorset. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 168,000 and is therefore the largest city in Dorset.
The town was founded in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell and the construction of the railway contributed to its development. In 1870, Bournemouth was officially recognized as a city.
Originally part of Hampshire, it became part of Dorset during the reorganization of local government in 1974. Since 1997, the city has had a so-called unitary authority.
Bournemouth is especially popular as a recreational area, thanks to its location two hours drive from London is a popular destination for the inhabitants of the metropolis, who come here mainly for weekend stays by the sea.
The city is located directly on the Jurassic Coast, a 155 km long stretch of beautiful and largely unspoilt coastline, which was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city boasts 11 kilometers of sandy beaches and is also popular with surfers.
