Middlesbrough is a large town on the south bank of the River Tees in the North East of England. Located in Ceremonial County North Yorkshire. The local unitary authority is called the Middlesbrough Borough Council.
Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it became the center of the County Borough of Teesside in 1968, which was incorporated into the non-metropolitan county of Cleveland in 1974. It ceased to exist in 1996 and the current situation has been in force since then.
The city differs from its surroundings within Teesside by greater urbanization associated with greater population density. The urban area extends beyond the city's own borders (Middlesbrough Borough) and extends into the Eston, Grangetown, Normanby, Ormesby and South Bank areas.
About 10 km north of the city lies the Teesu Estuary and a few km south is the edge of the North York Moors National Park. 5 km east lies the third largest port in the United Kingdom, Teesport, and 13 km west near Darlington is Durham Tees Valley Darlington Airport.
