General Information about Florida

History of Florida

The Native American tribes living in the area of Florida in the 16th century were the Apalachee, the Timucua, the Ais, the Tocobaga, the Calusa and the Tequesta.

The first European to explore the area was Spanish Juan Ponce de León in 1513. He called it “La Florida,” which means “the land of flowers.” In 1539, Hernando de Soto and his people established the first settlements.

The Spanish brought Christianity to the local tribes, which was later strategical for maintaining their control. They also introduced cattle, horses, sheep, and the Castilian language to the region.

In 1763, Spain exchanged Florida for Havana with the Kingdom of Great Britain. After numerous wars between different groups of various European settlers, Florida gained statehood in 1845.

Much of Florida is on a peninsula, no part of the state is far from the ocean. This also affects the climate, which is humid subtropical and tropical. The nickname of the state “Sunshine State.”

There are also cool spots to see apart from the nature, such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Legoland Florida, and lots of museums.
