South Carolina is a state located on the east coast of the United States, in the South Atlantic region of the southern region of the USA. South Carolina borders North Carolina in the north and Georgia in the southwest. The eastern boundary of the state forms the Atlantic Ocean.
The Province of Carolina was established in the 1620s on the territory of the two later union states. This English colony was divided in 1729 into the Province of North Carolina (northern part) and the Province of South Carolina (southern part).
In 1776, South Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies founded by the United States of America (USA). It was the first state (or English province) to ratify the Articles of Confederation and the Permanent Union.
The Permanent Constitution of the United States of America was ratified by South Carolina as the eighth state in a row on May 23, 1788.
However, it was also the first state to secede from the United States (Union) before the Civil War began on December 20, 1860. A few months later, the American Civil War began in Fort Sumter, Charleston, during which South Carolina was part of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. After the defeat of the Confederacy in the Civil War, it was reunited to the Union in 1868.
South Carolina is known for its coastline with many islands. Beautiful parks, historic towns and former plantations bring visitors closer to colonial times and African-American and European culture transferred to these parts.
The name of the state is derived from the Latin form of the name of King Charles I Stuart (Carolus), who gave rise to the original English colony, which includes both Carolinas.
