Illinois is a state in the Midwestern and Great Lakes Regions with the sixth largest population of the whole of USA. Illinois borders Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky.
The capital city is Springfield, however, the biggest and most well-known is Chicago. Other big cities are Aurora and Rockford.
The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1673, French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet first came to the area we now call the state of Illinois. The area was a part of New France and then La Louisiane.
The French were defeated by the British in the Seven Years War and the area became British. For a while, it was even a part of the British Province of Quebec, before becoming a part of the United States in the 1780s. In 1818, Illinois became the 21st state of the US.
Most of Illinois has a humid continental climate. However, this varies throughout the year.
The most visited place in the whole state is definitely Chicago. You can visit the Chicago Skydeck and observe the world from the highest deck in the western hemisphere.
Chicago is a home of culture, so don’t miss a performance at the Chicago Theatre, or hear the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. An exciting display can be seen in the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum. Another destination for museum lovers in the Museum of Science and Industry.
Bookworms will enjoy a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s childhood home. And if you are more into nature, you will love the butterfly house at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
The origins of the name “Illinois” is a bit of a mystery. It is one of the many spellings of the name the French Catholic missionaries gave the Illinois Native Americans. It was considered to mean “men” by early scholars, however, this theory turned out to be false.
