State of New York is a state located on the east coast of the United States, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the northeastern region of the United States.
It borders the Canadian province of Quebec to the north, and the entire northwestern border with the province of Ontario runs along the water surface (including Lake Erie, Lake Ontario). The southeastern boundary of the state forms the Atlantic Ocean.
In the 17th century, part of the territory of New York State was part of the Dutch province of New Netherlands, which was occupied by the English in 1664. They founded a province here, which they named after James, Duke of York.
In 1776, the province became one of the original thirteen founding states of the United States. In 1777, the Battle of Saratoga took place on its territory, a turning point in the American Revolutionary War.
New York, as the eleventh state in a row, ratified the Constitution of the United States of America on July 26, 1788.
New York State is home to several prestigious universities, such as Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University and Rockefeller University.
Lake Placid Ski Resort hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. The capital is Albany with 100,000 inhabitants. The largest cities are New York with 8.5 million inhabitants (the largest city in the USA)
The New York metropolitan area, extending to neighboring states, has a population of approximately 24 million, making it one of the world's largest conurbations and the largest in North America.
From 1785 to 1790, the city of New York was the capital of the United States.
